First Call publishes a variety of writing, including, but not limited to, social and political commentary, academic essays, student opinions, in-depth reporting, short fiction, film and music reviews and any form of poetry. Submissions are asked to be kept under 2500 words, and generally average around 1200. Frequent contributors of written work may become regular columnists.
First Call also publishes photography and art submissions. The magazine prints in grayscale and features a new, full-bleed photograph on the cover of each issue, as well as photo-spotlights on the inside. Free-standing art such as cartoons is welcome, in addition to the art that accompanies written articles.
All submissions should be sent to email@example.com as attachments. We ask that writers and artists provide their year and school as well as their Penn email address so that we can give them proper credit. We accept submissions at any time during the academic year and publish bi-weekly. To sign up for updates and issue release dates, please email firstname.lastname@example.org and ask to be added to the listserv.
We welcome submissions from all undergraduate students currently enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania. We seek to publish Penn’s best undergraduate writing and art as well as to represent the wide range of creative undertakings of the student body.
